Title: New material for HH
Post by: BillionSix on May 15, 2018, 09:02:31 PM
Well, if you ever do any new Hinterlands material, it would be nice to have environs that are places in Asia. Or maybe an Australia environ where the seasonal changes are opposite to the surrounding places. :)

The idea is to create Upper Hinterland and those terrain types would fit into the design of it being somewhat different from normal Hinterland sections.

Well, there are a lot of unexplored territories even on lower side.
Though I did think of the idea that all the people on the upper side got there through right turns. :)

I'll keep that in mind.

You know, Richard listened to Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville while writing HH, and I played Michael Nesmith's Rio for inspiration while I worked on the graphic design.  Sort of a laidback Father Goose meets McHale's Navy meets Talespin vibe overall.

But I have gotten emails from people who set up their games with master races and empires bent on conquest and massive battles across environs.  Maybe the more hierarchical Uppers (type A right turners) go to the Hit Side where they rebuild the ratrace, while the Offbeats (type B left turners) end up in the HH Flip Side we know and love?

But seriously, Richard revealed to me that the HH were sandwiched between the outer shells of the Dyson Sphere built by Tehrmelern Alts who decided to batten down the hatches and wait out the Mellor threat, in part to act as an ark or bioreserve to rebuild from.  Asian and Australian environs wouldn't be a problem.  Evil Empires who started blowing up environs would probably get the exterminator called in.  So...  no canon, if a great twist for wargamers.

Sorry.  Just rambling.  Thanks for the inspiration.

Interesting. My personal headcanon was that the Hinterlands are the result of a highly advanced charity organization with post-scarcity resources. Basically, the multiverse is glitchy and people tend to "fall" out of it. The machinery behind the Hinterlands collects these lost people from the timeless void between universes and drops them in an environ that is close to where they came from. Being largely automatic, it's not 100% accurate, though.

Richard left such things open precisely because he believed people should play the way they wanted to.

Since Tehrmelern tech is biotech, it is entirely possible that the automated "filter and bubbler" system is sentient and started rescuing fallouts at its own behest, even if the Tehrmelern had selfish motives.

Weirdzone is what happens when the Fringepaths glitch and an entire zeroplot area is blown out into the in-between weirdspace by an inter-dimensional collision.  Not a friendly place to end up in with nothing but the clothes on your back.

Still chugging away at Revision 2 of HH.  One thing though...  Any suggestions for revamping the character sheets and other addons (passport, pilot log, etc.)?   Did you use them as is, or design your own?

I have decided NOT to specify the "canon" location of the Hinterlands.  Richard never dictated to the fans.  But there ARE more Lower Environs beyond the core group mapped in the original design.

I pretty much stuck to the book when I ran my game. I did decide to develop some of the NPCs and made the Butcher a character running things in the background. Still had to figure out what he would do on New Akron that would be considered illegal... Actually, there would be a lot, but none of it would be PG-13...

Casino with rigged games was the first thing I thought of.

Good old protection rackets is another viable thing. And since stuff grows back if you cut it off, he will take a leg or an arm to let you know he's serious.

Welp, there will be new material in HH 2018.

Question, Enkeli cut down Richard's skill list for HH mightily, but it is still 4 pages.  I was looking at combining into skillsets, then went, "Why are we doing this at all?  We didn't offer an exhausting list of possible Attributes."

Skilllist thoughts?

I think the list can still be pared down a bit more but should still exist. It should be skills that fit HH and are not necessarily available in the average game systems people may be using. Things like airplane mechanic is just not found in most game systems so having it be a skill here would be good. Although I think we should give description of the skill instead of just the skill name if we cut the skill list to only HH based skills.

Well, depending on the RPG rule system, a single skill plus a related knowledge or feat/edge gives you the ability to do different things. In other rules they let one skill do many things. Creating a lot of skills will probably be ignored. Better off talking about careers and the types of skills each one would need.

Airplane mechanice: Maintains and repairs aircraft. Is knowledgeable in the repair of most prop aircraft. Knows how to get the parts they need to effect the repairs or do regular maintenance. On the Hinterland needs to be good at scavenging parts from various sources. If on New Akron, some weapon skills are required if you specialize in DC3 salvage.

Is it still going to be a largely systemless game? Or is there going to be a system made for it? I kind of like it the way it is, encouraging people to adapt their favorite systems to it.

Systemless.  I was going to revamp the old Tri Tac system, but this version will be EZ.

Cool. I have been thinking of running it with The Cypher System. :)

We are keeping it systemless, we are including the EZ Rules to make it simpler to convert various parts to whatever system you like to play.

Added a new scenario to HHr2 today.  Enkeli wrote it, I added art and made it match the rest.

If you didn't know we are adding pages to HH you would never be able to tell it wasn't there to begin with. It fits with all the older pages quite nicely.

We are adding content to the existing Environs as well as adding at least one new Environ to the book for your expanded play-ability in Hinterland.

Two so far.  Nowhere Else, based on Australia, and another based on Japan.

I like the idea that the seasons are reversed in the Australia Environ, so when it's winter everywhere else, it's summer there. :)

So, in Nowhere Else, there has to be Drop Bears. "Oi mate! That be my eucalyptus yer trod'n on!" One wonders if Koala's figure out that they can eat other things besides eucalyptus leaves? Theoretically, they can eat just about any plant and digest it.

Would an Environ based on China be surrounded by a Great Wall?

If you write it that way, it will.   :D

HH will remain a systemless format. we are providing the game setting and giving GMs as much additional information as we can to enrich their campaigns without telling them they have to use a specific rule set.

Each existing environ is getting new information, several new environs are being added, the material had been sorted and reorganized, the page formatting will be easier on the eyes and the art will be updated.  This has turned into a large project for us but we are sure it will be worth it when itís done.
