Title: Game Prompt: The Lost Princess
Post by: Kedamono on May 10, 2019, 05:44:20 PM
While eating lunch, I had an idea for a Hardwired Hinterland scenario.

It starts with the PCs being there when a Drop-in happens. Since we've never covered what a "Drop-in" event looks like, play it up. Lightning, thunder, swirling clouds, a vortex that then spits out a young woman dressed in nothing more than bedclothes, and looking slightly emaciated.

She'll be frantic, saying that they're after them, then "Where's papa? Mother? Where are they!" It will take a bit to calm her down to the point where you can get her name. At first she says it's "Anna", then she remembers her station in life and says with all sincerity:

"I am Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia"

Yes, it's Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova, the lost member of the Russian Royal Family. Yes, she knows things that only Anastasia would know. She's the Real Deal. And she's in the hands of the players.

There's many ways this scenario can go. Yes, the folks of Little Kiev would probably welcome her with open arms, but their "Russia" is more like Peter The Great's Russia than Czar Nikolas' Russia. She's used to western conveniences, circa 1916 thereabouts. Also, people appear where they would fit in best... and she did not appear on Little Kiev, but New Old New York. And finally, while she could take on the mantle of Czarina, except she was never taught to be a ruler. To be brutally honest, her fate was to be married off to some noble family.

Second, thanks to certain folks in NONY, the tales of Anastasia are well known. At least two radio plays, four plays, one opera and ballet have been about her appearing in the HH and going on to greater glory. And now, she's really here. There are folks that would want to help her attain her fictionalized self's glory, and those that don't.

Some would use her as a pawn in various political games, and others would want to see her dead for the crimes of her father, real or imagined.

What does she want? I'll let you the GM figure that one out.

There needs to be someone ALREADY claiming to be Anastasia, backed by political/social forces that would at the very least be embarrassed to be fooled, or angry at the thought of giving up a useful pawn.

True, and remember, people come from all sorts of alternate worlds. For all anyone knows, that other Anastasia is also the real deal from a different alternate. Perhaps one where the Romanovs escape to Europe and never had the deprivations that the new Anastasia went through?
