Title: What's your favorite non-human Fringeworthy race?
Post by: wasahbe on May 10, 2018, 04:58:22 AM
 :o  Slarg?  Ratwillies?  Tehrmelern?

Why?

The Keegak seemed like a ready-made way to add some drama to an IDET group heading out.  Anytime you can add a 'Can we trust them or not?' element to an adventure it makes things that much more interesting.  Even if things are going well, having a Keegak pop out can trigger all the primal fear of goblins or gremlins in the native humans of many worlds.

Wow!  That would never have occurred to me.

We are looking at a sort of FW Players Guide, with all the race... um, heritage stuff brought together in one place instead of scattered across the base book and Portals expansions.  I was fishing for a idea of who to start with.

My favorite? Slargs! I can play them pretty well, that mix of sniveling coward and sneaky so and so that makes a Slarg.

The Tehrmelern Trees. Lots of story material in there.

I like the Mellor, though that may be more of a weakness on my part for shapeshifters. Though, even with that aside, the idea of a race who was meant to be an arbiter of peace and prosperity, corrupted into something horrible is something I find thematically interesting.

Mellor aside, I think the Dimixi come up second as most interesting. As improbable as a human-like society may be for spider-like things, it's also kind of an interesting subversion to have a bug race not function as a hive. It's almost comforting after a fashion to think that you could run into something out there that may look quite different form you, but still has some similarities when you get past base appearances. And besides, hey, they're spider people. Spider people are cool.

it is the -100 modifier to charm or diplomacy when initiated by a 2 meter high arachnid.

There are those moments of awkwardness when the Dimixi mistakes your golden retriever for a meal too.

Quite useful as guards... they excel at tying up struggling prey and just tell your prisoners that if they try to escape the giant spider is allowed to digest them from the inside out.
