Pocket Stop: Carnivale
« on: June 14, 2019, 06:05:01 AM »
Carnivale is a pocket stop constructed by the Tehrmelern as a high-tech amusement park.
Maintained and operated entirely by robots and androids, it appears as a small island about five kilometers in width surrounded by what appears to be an endless sea; in fact, it is a classic 'closed' universe about one hundred kilometers in diameter in the shape of a disk where space is folded back upon itself, and anyone sailing a boat far enough in one direction will eventually find themselves approaching the island from the opposite side.
(The 'sky' only extends upward about fifty kilometers, then curves back in the same bizarre fashion)
High clouds drift across an eternal summer sky, and although there are proper day and night cycles on a 24-hour clock, the temperature is always a pleasant 24 degrees C. The amusement park has nature parks, sandy beaches, and even botanical gardens for the guests to enjoy while perfectly manicured trees and shrubs decorate the midway; the midway features food, carnival games, and a number of amusement rides designed by the Tehrmelern using advanced technology.
The amusement rides include:

  • A high-tech rollercoaster where the rider zooms through the depths of space at insane speed, flying through alien solar systems, nebulae, and barely escaping an exploding supernova. Although it appears dangerous, everything is accomplished through holograms, special effects, and gravity manipulation to create the illusion of moving at breakneck speed when the coaster barely moves at 50 KPH!
  • An underwater attraction where the rider cruises through beautiful reefs with fish and other marine life. Using force fields to protect the rider in their minisub from harm, the attraction combines life fish and sea life with robots and holograms to create the illusion of traveling through the ocean depths.
  • Sailboats which can travel anywhere around the island or as much as fifty kilometers toward the horizon, although the AI aboard the individual sailboats will monitor the vital signs of the passengers and immediately return to port at the first sign of trouble or if the boat encounters any danger.
  • Aircraft from hot air balloons to small dirigibles, helicopters, and fixed wing aircraft which like the sailboats are equipped with AI that will override the pilot at the first sign of trouble and immediately return to base.

All of the androids in Carnivale have been designed to appear as Tehrmelern, except their fur appears to be in bright day-glo colors; this will no doubt create some confusion among the explorers, who may believe them to be the real Tehrmelern! Fortunately, the androids have been programmed to immediately correct anyone who confuses them with their creators, since their primary programming function is to assist the guests and make sure their stay in the amusement park is as enjoyable as possible. Note that the androids and robots do not know what happened to the Tehrmelern, as their creators simply left the amusement park one day with no explanation, leaving the machines to their own devices.
As a final note, the amusement park is equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities operated by the androids, and short of raising the dead is capable of such miracles as reattaching severed limbs, regrowing lost limbs and organs within a matter of days, repairing broken bones or wounded flesh within hours, curing cancer and radiation damage, and performing surgeries far beyond the capability of modern medical science. However, advanced miracles such as rejuvenation and genetic engineering is beyond the capabilities of this hospital.

The "androids" could be Qellor, Tehrmelern bio-robots wearing suits...

Of course, there could be a couple of Greater Mellor in hibernation within the maintenance tunnels deep beneath the amusement park, waiting for signs that the pocket stop is active again. While one Mellor remains in its original form, the other proceeds to divide into Lesser Mellor and steal the shapes of animals in the nature preserve, waiting and watching until the Greater Mellor has the opportunity to attack an explorer and steal their shape as well. God help the Fringepaths if the Mellor succeed and the IDET Team have a crystal key in their possession!

Knowing my players, they would never accept a carnivale setting at face value.  Cool idea though.
