Monster Mother

The Monster Mother:

This is a piece of Terhmelern Bio Technology. The Terhmelern were superior bio-engineers, but their ethics were... interesting to put it kindly. An individual Terhmelern will be friendly and would never dream of hurting you or being mean to you. But they do things with their bio-technology can wind up being awful.

The Monster Mother is a tree. It grows fruit. The fruit are actually eggs. When they hatch you have a minature creature. It's adapted to being small, usually they're energetic and hungry. They're also horny as heck. So when two mini critters get together you get lots of babies who are somewhat larger. And their offspring are larger.

Eventually you end up with full sized critters.

The original function was to allow the Terhmelern to carry a menagerie in his pocket. The genetic code of the Monther Mother seeds is insane.

There are different flavors. Some loaded up with different creatures. There are underwater Monster Mothers. There are underground Monster mothers that do Thermo-Synthesis.

Monster Mothers can take telepathic commands for which kind of monsters to create, but the Terhmelern are notorious for not including users manuals.

Because of this if someone has a Monster Mother or a Monster Mother has THEM, then the production of the Monster Mother will reflect the desires or fears of their person.

These are source for critters that otherwise shouldn't exist in the game world. And for the GM to create things to challenge the PCs with.

And a reason to hit Terhmelern with ethics textbooks at every opportunity.

Maybe another version that was more about flora? Scatter a couple of those around on a barren planet and let the terraform process begin. Pop back in a century or two later and see how things are progressing. Then add the fauna version for good measure.
