"Why I let you talk me into this, I'll never know!" groused Ted Granger as he rode his stout pony through the wind blown snow.
His partner, Lorenzo Di Stefano, smiled and urged his pony on. "You didn't do your research on this world did you? I did. Like I told you in Ruävnjargg, there is something special about this world. Hey Alvar! How much farther?"
A smiling Laplander yelled back "Not much farther. Just over this ridge is the Korvatunturi mountains and where Joulupukki lives." Ahead of them was a ridge backed by a golden glow.
"Right, a oil rig or mining platform out in the middle of nowhere. OK," said a weary Ted, "what does that name mean. Let's see if I say Joulu Pukki... Nope that didn't work. Lorenzo, you say it in two parts."
"No," replied his friend. "it's my Christmas present to you. Just wait."
"My Christmas present was Hannele, a hot tub, and 750ml bottle of svagdricka," mused Ted. "If I turn back now, maybe she hasn't drank all the svagdricka."
"Forget her my friend!" yelled Alvar, as he stopped his horse at the crest of the ridge, then swept out his hand saying; "Welcome to Joulupukki's domain!"
The two rode up to the crest of the ridge and stared in wonder. Before them was a bowl valley filled with Christmas trees decorated to an inch of their lives and enough lights that they could photosynthesize in the middle of winter. Giant candy canes lined a road that lead to a mega building that was bedecked in gingerbread moulding and Laplander traditional architecture. A corral held numerous reindeer, a couple leaping into the air and flying for a few moments before landing.
"Joulupukki means 'Yule Goat' in Sami," explained Lorenzo, smiling at the look of childlike wonder on his friend's face. "Otherwise known as..."
"Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, Saint Nicholas, Sinterklaas, and..." continued Ted, "Santa Claus."
Across the valley, the booming laugh of a jolly old elf rang out.
"Come my friends!" said Alvar, "Let us go see if we've been naughty or nice this year!" and the three men rode into the valley...
--Merry Christmas!
